diggZ-Et – digg WordPress Plugin

May 23rd, 2008 - Ryan Christenson

diggZ-Et is a digg WordPress plugin that automatically displays a “digg” button for each post/page. I know some of you are thinking, “Oh great another Digg It plugin?”. Well yes, it’s another Digg It plugin, but it’s not the same old Digg plugin. This plugin was created primarily for one reason, that every other Digg WordPress plugin out there did not contain admin settings. Well guess what, this plugin does have admin settings! Enjoy the plugin, more plugins to come in the future.

Download diggZ-Et Here

Admin settings are as follows:

  1. Hide Buttons from Home Page – (I made this because all the other Digg It plugins would slow down my home page and they really are only needed on the post’s page.)
  2. Hide Buttons on Individual Posts
  3. Hide Buttons on Pages
  4. Hide Buttons on Tag Pages
  5. Hide Buttons on Archives (This is all Category, Author and Date Based Pages)
  6. Hide Buttons on Search Results Page
  7. Button Position – Display on Top Left or Right or Bottom below text, on left or right
  8. Set Background Color – In Hex Format (EG. #FFFFFF)
  9. Set Skin Type – Choose from the Default, Compact and Icon Skins.
  10. Browser Window Setting – Choose if you want the digg link to load in same window or a new window.
  11. Summary – Choose between Manual and Automatic
  12. Media – Choose a media type; News, Video, Image
  13. Topic – Choose a topic from the list. (Too many to list here)

Additional Features

  1. Manual Button Placement – Use shortcode to manually place your buttons.
  2. Media Scan – Use multiple types of media.

Admin Screen Shots:

All I ask is that you credit this plugin (i.e. include a link to this page or maybe add a link to your WordPress Blogroll).

With that said, I would love to hear what people think. Any suggestions or comments you have, I’d love to hear them.

  1. Thom Says:

This is a GREAT plug-in! I have tried others and they are junk. This one WORKS AND Works WELL!

    Have a few suggestions:

    1) Add an option for the Digg tag to appear on the Right OR Left side of Post.

    2) MOST of my posts fall into the “Media” type of “News” so I have this set as default. SOME of my posts are Videos and are not going to post correctly due to the way the current “Media” option works. I suggest leaving the option like it is BUT adding a scan to look for a TAG in the post to change the “Media” type for that one post ONLY. A tag might look like this:

Thank You for your effort on this and keep up the GREAT work!

  2. Thom Says:

My tag did not show in the last comment I am altering it so it will be visiable here. I suggest using the standard HTML “Comment” tage format. For this example [ = .

A tag might look like this:

    [!--digg_media=video--]

    Thanks

  3. Gorkfu Says:

Thanks for the suggestions Thom. They are really good suggestions. I will add them to my todo list.

  4. John Says:

1.1.0 is great, thanks for adding turning off digg on pages!

  5. Thom Says:

Great job on the update. Works well and LOVE the new options. Still have the Media Type Issue. I am sure your working on it.

  6. Gorkfu Says:

The media type tag fix will be available in the next version. Should be released in a day or two.

  7. Anon Says:

Thanks! It works now, it was the YARPP plugin.

“Yet Another Related Posts Plugin 1.5.1

Returns a list of the related entries based on keyword matches, limited by a certain relatedness threshold. Like the tried and true Related Posts plugins—just better! By mitcho (Michael Yoshitaka Erlewine).
    Inactive Activate | Edit”

  8. Gorkfu Says:

Ok, thanks for that info I’ll have to look into that and see what’s causing the issue.

  9. Nikitas Says:

This plug-in is FANTASTIC! Question, though: would there be any way to have the button placed on the BOTTOM of a post. This makes a bit more sense to me, since it’s when reaching the end of a post that someone decides whether or not to digg it.

  10. Gorkfu Says:

I can add that in to the next version. I was thinking about that before. Do you think it should be at the bottom below all the text or positioned left or right at the bottom just as the top is? I mean I could just add in all 3 of those options, but I’m curious.

  11. Nikitas Says:

I was thinking just either left or right, just like at the top, only now allowing for those position options at the bottom.

  12. Nikitas Says:

… see if you look at a typical post on my site (http://www.vinikitas.com/blog/2008/06/villa-venezia/), I format it in a certain way: subtitle, then photo, then text body. Placing the full Digg button, regardless of the side, at the top of my posts would throw off alignment altogether and ruin the aesthetics. Right now, I’m using the compact version that sits in alignment with the subtitle, and doesn’t throw off alignment of the either the photo or the text body. However, I’d much prefer to use the full button.

  13. Gorkfu Says:

I didn’t know it was picked up in the Google news section. I think some blogs do get picked up into Google news if they are considered news. Although, I didn’t see any of my blog postings in Google News when I did a search after reading your comment.

  14. Will Young Says:

Definitely can not wait to be able to put it at the bottom of the post. Otherwise this is a GREAT plug-in, thank you for your contribution.

  15. metroknow Says:

This plugin is great – so much easier than handcrafting it as I was doing before.

I did have one odd behavior though that I thought you might be interested in seeing — check out my post here: http://almostfit.com/2008/06/18/20-tactics-to-kill-the-fast-food-habit/

In both FF3 and IE6x I get double digg buttons (two) generated automatically within an individual post. Not sure why – Any ideas? The code looks identical for each button so I’m thinking it must be something inside the script, but not sure.

    Thanks!

  16. Gorkfu Says:

Two others had this issue in the past with other plugins being the culprit. Try deactivating all other plugins and leave diggZ-Et activated and see if the problem still exists. If another plugin is causing the problem please post which so I can look into it, thanks.

  17. metroknow Says:

@Gorkfu: Cool – I found it. Problem goes away when I disable Yet Another Related Posts Plugin (YARPP), which is from these guys: http://mitcho.com/code/yarpp/

Now I just need to find, er, yet ANOTHER related posts plugin…. ;)

  18. Gorkfu Says:

@metroknow: Thanks, I found the problem. It’s bizarre that it only showed up on one of my servers though. The problem lies with the option, “Automatically display related posts?”. If that is checked it causes WordPress to loop twice which in essence is an incorrect way to do a plugin. It essentially loads the post’s content on the first loop and then searches through on the second loop to find related posts.” In effect causing two Digg buttons to appear.

  19. metroknow Says:

Awesome – glad to help. It’s a great plugin.

    Best –

  20. Nikitas Says:

@Gorkfu: I just today had the chance to check back here, to discover you’d released a new version allowing the bottoms now at the bottom of the post. You are AWESOME! Thanks so much! I understand the complexities of wrapping text around the button; no biggie. I’m VERY happy now to be able to have the buttons on the bottom now! Thanks again! Yay!

  21. Gorkfu Says:

@Nikitas: No problem, I’m just glad people are getting good use out of it.

  22. Jeff Says:

Hey Gorkfu, like everyone else, I’m going to echo “Great plugin”!

I submitted my first post to DIGG tonight and the auto-generated summary was all messed up. Like it included %2c or something everwhere I had made an edit (read: Typo and hit backspace) as part of the description. Strange.

Anybody else seen or reported this?

  23. Gorkfu Says:

That is URL encoding. It shouldn’t be showing URL encoded characters. It is only suppose to be passed as URL encoded and then converted to ASCII coding. I’ll check it out tomorrow and see if I can see what’s going on.

  24. Arthur Says:

I tried deactivating each of the others one-at-a-time while leaving diggZ-et on and the same problem happened. It’s not my blog so I’ll have to go into the site late at night and turn everything off and turn this one back on to see what happens. I’ll let you know.

  25. Gorkfu Says:

Now with the new release of WordPress 2.6 if you find any bugs with diggZ-Et please post about it here. I’ll do some testing on my own, but it doesn’t look like they changed much let alone anything with the plugin system.

  26. Gorkfu Says:

I would like to note that the new version of the YARPP plug-in no longer causes any known issues with diggZ-Et. You can get YARPP 2.0 here.

  27. Gorkfu Says:

For those that requested it, I’ll be releasing plugins very soon for reddit and dZone buttons.

  28. Philix Says:

Thanks, this is exactly what i was looking for.

  29. james Says:

do you really want to encourage digg users onto wordpress sites? on digg wordpress is a synonym for ‘cannot establish connection to database’

  30. Gorkfu Says:

I’m not trying to encourage anyone to do anything. I’ve created this plugin because there was a need. That is the only reason.

  31. Chris Giovagnoni Says:

I like your plug-in. It worked well for me, but I had to deactivate it because it was inserting lots of code into my Feedburner RSS feed. Can you eliminate that?

Also, when I used the compact icon at the end of the blog post it would show up in the right place sometime and in the middle of a post at other times. Multiple users reported this and it only seemed to happen in IE, not Firefox.

  32. Gorkfu Says:

@Chris; Thanks for the feedback. It shouldn’t be inserting code into feedburner anymore, that looked fixed when I tested it last, I’ll recheck that though.

I’ll be sure to fix the icon problem too.

  33. Gorkfu Says:

The JavaScript problem has been fixed and will be in the next release for tomorrow. I forgot about the IE6 bug with absolute positioning and will fix that also.

  34. Sir Robbie Rob Says:

Hey There, I love your plugin.

I have been having some problems I want to share with you. Maybe you can help me with a solution.

The first one, after I digg the first post the digg buttons for the next two post link to the first digg. So if I digg post #1, post #2 and #3 digg links go to post #1 digg address. The digg results also reflect post #1.

The second issue, I specify to change the background of default digg icon but it never changes.

    Thanks

  35. Gorkfu Says:

    @Sir Robbie Rob;

    1. I looked at your blog and it really is messed up with the buttons. Especially your first post which looks like it was submitted twice under two posts. I’m not sure why it’s doing this but I think it may be your theme causing the issue.
Can you try reverting to default wordpress theme just for a few seconds during a time when you don’t have many visitors to see if the problem still persists?

    2. Are you changing the background color in Hex? (EG. #FFFFFF)
Edit: After looking at your blog again I just noticed only your first button shows a white background. The rest correctly display it.

  36. Sir Robbie Rob Says:

I just tried the the Classic theme and the default one. Both themes saw the same problem. I think tonight I will uninstall the plugin and install again. Hopefully the problem will go away.

Do you have any ideas about what could be causing it?

  37. Gorkfu Says:

It could be caused by another plugin or another snippet of JavaScript somewhere that is interfering with diggZ-Et’s javascript.

  38. Jeff Says:

Great plugin!!! Thanks. I have been looking for weeks for a plugin that I can add to my blog that will display the Digg button. Your’s works the best!

  39. Metroknow Says:

I’ve been using the plugin for a quite a while now and really like it, but I was wondering if there is a way to manually disable it in a single post. I have a couple of posts here and there that I’d like to disable the button on, but I want to keep them on the rest of the posts. Is there a tag I can add to suppress it?

    Thanks much, and great work!

  40. Gorkfu Says:

@Metroknow; To hide a button in a single post refer to the first admin image above or the FAQ.

  41. Metroknow Says:

Thanks – my apologies for missing the obvious! :)

  42. Gorkfu Says:

@Metroknow; No Problem. I like your blog, you got some nice articles on nutrition in there, keep up the good work. :)

  43. Rai Says:

I tried using the plugin to my site and it works fine, except the button won’t display the number of diggs in the home page, but does on single post.

What could be the issue here?

    TIA.

Btw, thanks for the plugin! It helped my site gain more visitors. :)

  44. Gorkfu Says:

Most if not all issues are caused by other plugins. Try deactivating all other plugins, leaving only diggZ-Et activated and see if the problem remains. If you do find a plugin causing issues please post the name of it here so I can get it fixed.

  45. Rai Says:

I deactivated and left diggz-et only, but it still won’t display the number of diggs in homepage :(

  46. Gorkfu Says:

Ok well your actually the second person to report this. I’ll have to look into it tomorrow.

  47. Stephen Baugh Says:

    Thanks for a great pluggin.

It sounds like I am having the same issue with the plugin. DiggZ-Et is referencing an old post for everyone it looks up, even if off not in the home page. It seems that the plu in is taking the highest number digg and displaying that and holding the link.

Have a look at my home page to see what I mean.

Thanks again, really appreciate the plugging.

    Cheers
    Stephen

  48. Gorkfu Says:

@ Stephan Baugh; Hmm, its acting even stranger on your site.

I’ll need a volunteer that is having the homepage issues to test the older versions of diggZ-Et so I can find out at which version this bug started to occurr. You can download old versions of diggZ-Et here.

  49. Rai Says:

I tried using the older version 1.1.0 and it worked. The numbers are showing properly again.

    HTH.

  50. Gorkfu Says:

Thanks Rai, did you try any later versions than that? Or is that the latest release that worked for you? I just want to be sure at which release the bug popped up. Thanks again for checking this.

  51. Wystery Says:

Nice, I am using this plugin now and it is looking good so far. Can I suggest a few other features?

    1. If we make it only appear on a single page, maybe you can write a detection code to detect incoming link from digg, and if there’s one, the digg button will appear on the homepage for that post as well as in the single page.

    2. Maybe a notification (email) to admin when someone just submitted a fresh article to digg.

I think these two features will be really useful to someone. Keep up the good work.

  52. Gorkfu Says:

Thanks for the suggestions Wystery. I’ll add them to my to do list.

  53. Gorkfu Says:

@Rai, Stephen Baugh, Sir Robbie Rob and anyone else that reported bugs with homepage and/or images; These bugs have been fixed and will be released in 1.2.0 shortly.

  54. Skype Help Says:

Good stuff, Gorkfu! I am just about to move to WP, but was not happy with lack of plug-in configurability – diggZ-Et fixes this for Diggs!

  55. beggers Says:

This is great but I have the same problem mentioned a few months ago by Jeff. The title and description always have “junk” characters like this in them:

Sushi Bar Restaurant Hosts %u201CMartinis & Manicure

I’ve tried turning on/off various plug-ins without any success. Any ideas? Thanks.

  56. beggers Says:

I just checked and I am also set to UTF-8. I just try tried again with “straight quotes” and “curly quotes” and got these results:

    “test” %u201Ctest%u201D

So clearly those different quotes are affected differently. I think your test used straight double quotes so it might just be the curly double quotes that cause the problem. Here is a topic title that has the curly quotes:

    http://www.vegasnews.com/1324/ra-sushi-bar-restaurant-hosts-%e2%80%9cmartinis-manicures%e2%80%9d-event.html

Here’s a little discussion about the different quote marks:

    http://gjtm.blogspot.com/2008/06/two-types-of-quote.html

  57. Gorkfu Says:

Ah ok, I have to admit I have forgotten about curly quotes, as I never use them much, if at all.

Digg’s JavaScript is suppose to encode and decode any characters sent through, why they don’t do it with curly quotes, I have no clue.

I’ll add a fix in for curly quotes in the next release.

  58. Jan Ole Peek Says:

Excellent plugin! Finally an easy to use digg plugin that just works right out of the box!

  59. Gorkfu Says:

@Jan; Thanks Jan, glad you like it. :)

@Beggers; Apparently the problem is on Digg’s side. No matter what I do to change the curly quote encoding back to curly quotes (or vice versa), it still comes up as the encoding on their end. It is odd that it does because they do use UTF-8 encoding, so I would think it shouldn’t be happening.

Well the only solution is to not use curly quotes or I can put in a fix to change curly quotes to regular straight quotes.

It’s actually good practice to not use them, they have been known to screw up search engine results. I don’t keep up on SEO practices, but I’m sure search engines still have issues with them.

  60. duplz Says:

    hi,Gorkfu
thanx,it works! but how can i control where the icon display?

  61. Gorkfu Says:

If you have found any bugs or have a feature suggestion for diggZ-Et, please post them at our new feedback forum. Anonymous posting is available.

  62. DxLwebs Says:

Hey I added this plugin to my blog at http://www.gamemasterx.com/blog but nothing shows up! Even in the settings area I do not get the icons for digg, has something changed?

Thank you for this plugin it will be great when it works.

  63. Gorkfu Says:

    @DxLwebs;

It should work, try using DiggZ-Et by itself by deactivating all other plugins. Most issues are usually caused by other plugins.

  64. Time Synchronisation Says:

    This is a great plugin

  65. Gorkfu Says:

All our social media plugins work with 2.7. However, in the backend the styling will need some restructuring. I’ll get on this task asap.

  66. Danny Says:

I have a small problem where on my theme (Wootheme’s Fresh News) I have the posts on my homepage showing the excerpt option so that it shortens the posts but when I enable this the digg’s image dosnt show up is there anyway for this to be fixed?

    Thanks
    Danny

  67. Gorkfu Says:

    @ Danny

Excerpt’s will only show words of your post and not display any Javascript code. The only way around this for now would be to use the summary option from reading options instead of using the excerpt function.

I’ll look into it and see if it’s possible to append the button to excerpts.

  68. Danny Says:

    Thanks Gorkfu

  69. Rene @ WordPressPluginGuide Says:

Nice plugin, but the option i miss is to position the Digg button by itself in my template with a tag instead of selecting one of the four fixed positions…

  70. HighTechDad Says:

Love the plug-in but I ran into an issue. Somehow, the button gets pulled into the RSS feed as well which breaks some things on a site where we syndicate the feed. Is there any way to ensure that the button/functionality does NOT appear within an RSS feed? Perhaps a toggle in a future version.

    Thanks,
    HTD

  71. Gorkfu Says:

    @HighTechDad;

Hmm, well I thought I fixed that issue awhile back. I’ll look into it again and see what can be done. The JavaScript shouldn’t be activated in the RSS feed. There was a similar issue with feedburner, but that was fixed.

On a further note, I’ll be releasing the new plugin, S-ButtonZ this weekend. It is a compilation of all four of our social media button plugins.

  72. Gorkfu Says:

diggZ-Et 1.3.8 has been released with a compatibility fix for PHP 4.4+ Please let me know if you still have issues.
