diggZ-Et - WordPress Plugin
May 23rd, 2008 - GorkfuI’m proud to announce our first WordPress plugin, diggZ-Et. It essentially displays a “digg” button for each post. I know some of you are thinking, “Oh great another Digg It plugin?”. Well yes it’s another Digg It plugin. I made this plugin primarily because every other Digg plugin has no settings in the admin. Guess what, this plugin does have admin settings!

This plugin’s admin settings are as follows:
- Hide Buttons from Home Page - (I made this because all the other Digg It plugins would slow down my home page and they really are only needed on the post’s page.)
- Hide Buttons on Individual Posts
- Hide Buttons on Pages
- Hide Buttons on Tag Pages
- Hide Buttons on Archives (This is all Category, Author and Date Based Pages)
- Hide Buttons on Search Results Page
- Button Position - Display on Top Left or Right or Bottom below text, on left or right
- Set Background Color - In Hex Format (EG. #FFFFFF)
- Set Skin Type - Choose from the Default, Compact and Icon Skins.
- Browser Window Setting - Choose if you want the digg link to load in same window or a new window.
- Summary - Choose between Manual and Automatic
- Media - Choose a media type; News, Video, Image
- Topic - Choose a topic from the list. (Too many to list here)

This is a GREAT plug-in! I have tried others and they are junk. This one WORKS AND Works WELL!
Have a few suggestions:
1) Add an option for the Digg tag to appear on the Right OR Left side of Post.
2) MOST of my posts fall into the “Media” type of “News” so I have this set as default. SOME of my posts are Videos and are not going to post correctly due to the way the current “Media” option works. I suggest leaving the option like it is BUT adding a scan to look for a TAG in the post to change the “Media” type for that one post ONLY. A tag might look like this:

There isn’t an option to remove it from pages. To be honest I totally forgot to make that option. It’ll be in the next version for sure.

I fixed that bug in a previous release. Are you using 1.1.0 ? If so please tell me how your gallery is setup so I can verify the bug.

I’m also thinking about adding in support for Reddit buttons. Maybe an option to run them side by side or pick either or etc. I could always make a separate plugin for reddit but that seems a bit unnecessary. Would love to hear people’s comments on this.

Is it possible for me to edit the php and add in the ability to use my own Digg icons? I’m using a very black theme, and the only one that looks decent is the shovel man, however it is just too small for my liking.

Well it is possible to create custom Digg icons. I’ve seen it down before, the only problem is you’ll need two sets created if you want it to perform like the default icon. I don’t have a system set up to use custom icons just yet. Although I’m debating whether to create one or not.

Well IMHO, I think you should. I think this plugin would rock with that functionality. The only thing that keeps me from using it is that I cannot use a custom button(s).
I’d also like to ask, since I see that it pulls the icons from Digg.com, can I edit the plugin to pull another icon instead of the default ones you selected?

It pulls the icons through a JavaScript file. Digg itself I don’t believe has it setup to pass a variable to use custom icons. However, they do allow to just use a hyperlink which you could associate with your own icon. The only problem with that is the icon wouldn’t be able to display the data the default one has. (EG. If it was dugg or not and how many times it’s been digged.) I guess I’ll make that a possibility if people just want a button to match their website design and don’t mind losing those dynamic values.

That’s the first time I’ve seen that happen. Please reply on here or send a support request via our contact us page with a screen shot or explanation of your admin options. Also are you using the new media scan feature?

You could also try and deactivate all plugins if it’s not too much trouble and leave diggZ-Et activated to see if the problems remains. If the problem remains then we know it’s not another plugin causing the issue. If the problem doesn’t remain, could I get a list of the other activated plugins you’re using. Then when I get time I’ll test them out and see which may be causing an issue.

I activated YARPP 1.5.1 on my test server with diggZ-Et today and it has no issues. I played around with all the options and still can’t get the bug to reappear. Any chance you can take a screenshot of your admin options for YARP.

This plug-in is FANTASTIC! Question, though: would there be any way to have the button placed on the BOTTOM of a post. This makes a bit more sense to me, since it’s when reaching the end of a post that someone decides whether or not to digg it.

I can add that in to the next version. I was thinking about that before. Do you think it should be at the bottom below all the text or positioned left or right at the bottom just as the top is? I mean I could just add in all 3 of those options, but I’m curious.

… see if you look at a typical post on my site (http://www.vinikitas.com/blog/2008/06/villa-venezia/), I format it in a certain way: subtitle, then photo, then text body. Placing the full Digg button, regardless of the side, at the top of my posts would throw off alignment altogether and ruin the aesthetics. Right now, I’m using the compact version that sits in alignment with the subtitle, and doesn’t throw off alignment of the either the photo or the text body. However, I’d much prefer to use the full button.

Very impressive that this blog is syndicated through Google and is it something that is just up to Google or you actively created?

I didn’t know it was picked up in the Google news section. I think some blogs do get picked up into Google news if they are considered news. Although, I didn’t see any of my blog postings in Google News when I did a search after reading your comment.

Positioning the Digg button at the bottom poises many issues. If you want it with the text wrapped around it at left or right, it’s technically impossible without javascript, unless I overlooked something. As for positioning it below all the text that is simple enough. Positioning below the text will go in the next version.

This plugin is great - so much easier than handcrafting it as I was doing before.

In both FF3 and IE6x I get double digg buttons (two) generated automatically within an individual post. Not sure why - Any ideas? The code looks identical for each button so I’m thinking it must be something inside the script, but not sure.

Two others had this issue in the past with other plugins being the culprit. Try deactivating all other plugins and leave diggZ-Et activated and see if the problem still exists. If another plugin is causing the problem please post which so I can look into it, thanks.

That plugin was reported before and when I last checked it I could not get it to show double icons on my test server no matter what I did with the options. Could you take a screen of your options for YARPP or reply with how you had it setup. I’d really appreciate it, thanks.

@metroknow: Thanks, I found the problem. It’s bizarre that it only showed up on one of my servers though. The problem lies with the option, “Automatically display related posts?”. If that is checked it causes WordPress to loop twice which in essence is an incorrect way to do a plugin. It essentially loads the post’s content on the first loop and then searches through on the second loop to find related posts.” In effect causing two Digg buttons to appear.

Nice plugin! But, I have a little problem. When it is activated and you edit a post and save, the blog tries to go to http://www.cheatseekingmissiles.com/wp-admin/post.php and instead of that auto-referring to edit.php the screen hangs as a blank screen. If I deactivate the plugin the blog works properly.
Any clues?

Hey Gorkfu, like everyone else, I’m going to echo “Great plugin”!
I submitted my first post to DIGG tonight and the auto-generated summary was all messed up. Like it included %2c or something everwhere I had made an edit (read: Typo and hit backspace) as part of the description. Strange.
Anybody else seen or reported this?

That is URL encoding. It shouldn’t be showing URL encoded characters. It is only suppose to be passed as URL encoded and then converted to ASCII coding. I’ll check it out tomorrow and see if I can see what’s going on.

I tried deactivating each of the others one-at-a-time while leaving diggZ-et on and the same problem happened. It’s not my blog so I’ll have to go into the site late at night and turn everything off and turn this one back on to see what happens. I’ll let you know.

Now with the new release of WordPress 2.6 if you find any bugs with diggZ-Et please post about it here. I’ll do some testing on my own, but it doesn’t look like they changed much let alone anything with the plugin system.

hey, nice plugin except i need to get this postioned exactly where i want it on the single.php file, and not positioned from the admin panel (e.g. Left, right).
is there a function where i can call it in the single.php anywhere i want.

Are you meaning you want to be able to place it anywhere when making a post or page? Or are you meaning anywhere in a template file?
There’s currently no function to do either but they are good ideas, I’ll add them to my todo list.

I like your plug-in. It worked well for me, but I had to deactivate it because it was inserting lots of code into my Feedburner RSS feed. Can you eliminate that?
Also, when I used the compact icon at the end of the blog post it would show up in the right place sometime and in the middle of a post at other times. Multiple users reported this and it only seemed to happen in IE, not Firefox.

@Chris; Thanks for the feedback. It shouldn’t be inserting code into feedburner anymore, that looked fixed when I tested it last, I’ll recheck that though.

The JavaScript problem has been fixed and will be in the next release for tomorrow. I forgot about the IE6 bug with absolute positioning and will fix that also.

Brilliant plugin.
One suggestion. If a reader visits a blog post through a link containing an anchor (http://www.myblog.com/my-latest-blog-post/#comments for example), the plugin ought to strip the #comments anchor before passing the URL any further. As it works currently, if http://www.myblog.com/my-latest-blog-post/ has a bunch of diggs already, the digg badge will still show up as if the post hasn’t been dugg yet.

It used to show it as broken code in feedburner and really feedburner shouldn’t pick up JavaScript at all, yet it does. I’ll see if there’s a way to remove it, but it’s unlikely.

Well the only way I see possible to remove the buttons from feedburner on feedburner’s side is to toggle off, “Landing page renders as a web page in all browsers” on the Browser Friendly Optimization page. Although, I would recommend keeping it set to render as a web page. At least the buttons point to the correct pages.

Hey There, I love your plugin.
I have been having some problems I want to share with you. Maybe you can help me with a solution.
The first one, after I digg the first post the digg buttons for the next two post link to the first digg. So if I digg post #1, post #2 and #3 digg links go to post #1 digg address. The digg results also reflect post #1.
The second issue, I specify to change the background of default digg icon but it never changes.

1. I looked at your blog and it really is messed up with the buttons. Especially your first post which looks like it was submitted twice under two posts. I’m not sure why it’s doing this but I think it may be your theme causing the issue.
Can you try reverting to default wordpress theme just for a few seconds during a time when you don’t have many visitors to see if the problem still persists?
2. Are you changing the background color in Hex? (EG. #FFFFFF)
Edit: After looking at your blog again I just noticed only your first button shows a white background. The rest correctly display it.

I just tried the the Classic theme and the default one. Both themes saw the same problem. I think tonight I will uninstall the plugin and install again. Hopefully the problem will go away.

It could be caused by another plugin or another snippet of JavaScript somewhere that is interfering with diggZ-Et’s javascript.

I’ve been using the plugin for a quite a while now and really like it, but I was wondering if there is a way to manually disable it in a single post. I have a couple of posts here and there that I’d like to disable the button on, but I want to keep them on the rest of the posts. Is there a tag I can add to suppress it?

I tried using the plugin to my site and it works fine, except the button won’t display the number of diggs in the home page, but does on single post.

Most if not all issues are caused by other plugins. Try deactivating all other plugins, leaving only diggZ-Et activated and see if the problem remains. If you do find a plugin causing issues please post the name of it here so I can get it fixed.

I can’t figure out why some people are having issues with the first three buttons on the Home Page appearing incorrectly. The only thing I can think of that can be causing issues other than plugins is a snippet of JavaScript that is inside a template. If you have Javascript somewhere in your template, this could very well cause a problem. One guy reported using google map API causing problems.

It sounds like I am having the same issue with the plugin. DiggZ-Et is referencing an old post for everyone it looks up, even if off not in the home page. It seems that the plu in is taking the highest number digg and displaying that and holding the link.
Have a look at my home page to see what I mean.

Nice, I am using this plugin now and it is looking good so far. Can I suggest a few other features?
1. If we make it only appear on a single page, maybe you can write a detection code to detect incoming link from digg, and if there’s one, the digg button will appear on the homepage for that post as well as in the single page.
2. Maybe a notification (email) to admin when someone just submitted a fresh article to digg.
I think these two features will be really useful to someone. Keep up the good work.

I tried using on the page template, but the button shows up anyway.

@ Maxim; That option should be working for DiggZ-Et. Although, I don’t think anyone would want the button on the search page. So with that said I’ll go ahead and add a hide option for the search page in the next version. Thanks for pointing this out.

great work on the Plugin mate. I wanted to know if I place the digg button on the bottom right is it possible for me to use the space to the right of the plugin to show some content

This is great but I have the same problem mentioned a few months ago by Jeff. The title and description always have “junk” characters like this in them:
Sushi Bar Restaurant Hosts %u201CMartinis & Manicure
I’ve tried turning on/off various plug-ins without any success. Any ideas? Thanks.

Sorry for the double post but I did a little research and discovered that it seems to only have this problem with “double quotes”. All the other punctuation seems to be going through fine.

Well that was silly of me, apparently I accidentally removed that fix in the last release. I’ll be adding it back in. That issue is with single and double quotes. Thanks for pointing this out.

Ok this is what I get for lack of sleep. After looking at the code again I apparently didn’t take the fix out, lol. I just tested 1.2 again and it doesn’t give me the issue.

I use UTF-8 Encoding on my blog, which I believe is the WordPress default. If you change the encoding, it may cause the problem.

I just checked and I am also set to UTF-8. I just try tried again with “straight quotes” and “curly quotes” and got these results:
“test” %u201Ctest%u201D
So clearly those different quotes are affected differently. I think your test used straight double quotes so it might just be the curly double quotes that cause the problem. Here is a topic title that has the curly quotes:

Ah ok, I have to admit I have forgotten about curly quotes, as I never use them much, if at all.
Digg’s JavaScript is suppose to encode and decode any characters sent through, why they don’t do it with curly quotes, I have no clue.
I’ll add a fix in for curly quotes in the next release.

@Beggers; Apparently the problem is on Digg’s side. No matter what I do to change the curly quote encoding back to curly quotes (or vice versa), it still comes up as the encoding on their end. It is odd that it does because they do use UTF-8 encoding, so I would think it shouldn’t be happening.
Well the only solution is to not use curly quotes or I can put in a fix to change curly quotes to regular straight quotes.
It’s actually good practice to not use them, they have been known to screw up search engine results. I don’t keep up on SEO practices, but I’m sure search engines still have issues with them.

@duplz, There’s a button position option in the settings. There’s currently no manual way to place the button, but hopefully when I get time I’ll make that happen.
